What a DAY!

What a DAY!

Yesterday JMF held a JMF Kids 4 Kids grant presentation at Armadale Primary school where 21 students and four adults have raised over $4500 so far during their challenge.

This presentation was special as it is the first of what we hope to be many JMF Kids 4 Kids schools across Australia who encourage their students to participate, create healthy habits by being active and very importantly teach their students the importance of giving and changing the life of another.

The presentation was held during the school assembly and we invited our Grant recipient families, our sponsors Boost Juice Foundation and Hyundai Help For Kids to join us to celebrate what the JMF Kids 4 Kids participants had achieved so far.

We hope that Armadale Primary school along with St Paul’s Grammar in NSW are the first of many schools to encourage their students to participate in this incredible program we run.

Could not have gotten through the day without Hyundai! Lots of things for the presentation in this boot!

A heart of GOLD and sheer determination makes Phoenix Rogers a girl that will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.

Phoenix is just 8 years old, the daughter of Football superstar Mat Rogers and TV personality Chloe Maxwell, and is one of our #JMFKids4Kids 8 weeks participants. She will complete an Ironman distance triathlon by swimming 4.8km, ride 180km and run 42.2km over 8 weeks because she wants to make a difference to the lives of children her own age who live in wheelchairs.

“I have already told Dad I will do an Ironman with him one day, but I’m just a kid so completing an Iron distance triathlon over an 8 weeks is pretty good for now”

She wants to raise as much money as she can to help children in wheelchairs.

“I think it’s so sad that some kids can’t do certain sports because they are in wheelchairs. I am hoping to raise lots of money to make lots of kids in wheelchairs smile … Mu mummy and Daddy like helping kids too. I am excited to do what i love and help raise money to help kids.”

Phoenix has a love for triathlon and won her age group in the Like Harrop Triathlon in Southport last year. Watch out! … This girl could one day represent Australia in the Olympics or at the IRONMAN World Championships as a professional triathlete.

Brodie is a SURVIVOR!

Brodie is a SURVIVOR!

JMF is proud to announce Brodie as our second JMF Kids & Big Kids 4 Kids grant recipient for 2015.

Brodie is a beautiful and strong willed 13-year-old boy who relies on a wheelchair for day-to-day mobility and still regularly undergoes treatment and surgeries at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Brodie has cerebral palsy which was caused by abuse, horrible shaking by his mother, when he was less than a year old.

What a smile this gorgeous boy has. He continues to fight every day to be as included and interactive in everyday life as he can possible be and continues to defy all the odds.

What a smile this gorgeous boy has. He continues to fight every day to be as included and interactive in everyday life as he can possible be and continues to defy all the odds.

Brodie lives with his grandparents who have dedicated their lives to caring for him. JMF first met him when he was six years old. The Foundation has granted over $20,000 in support for Brodie and his inspirational grandparents. The grants we have been able to provide have assisted with a wheelchair car modification, a new trike that at the time helped to build leg strength and provide some independence. We also have provided an accessible computer with a touch monitor that Brodie worked by touching the monitor instead of the keyboard and mouse.

Brodie has defied the odds all of his life and continues to push the boundaries on a daily basis. He has exceeded his reading goals and is considered to be top of his class and quite often will read a story to the whole class, he absolutely loves all of his books that he has and often stays in bed a bit longer on the weekend to read them.

He also loves his touch screen computer and his iPad and has a great love for music especially Michael Jackson. He sings with his Carers while he is in the shower and this is how they get him to do some of his exercises.

Brodie can write a little and is always challenging himself with new words to spell. He can correctly identify time to the hour and independently read the time on a digital clock and also analogue.

Brodie is one smart little boy especially as he has only got half a brain as a result of the horrific shaking that he endured as a baby.

As Brodie grows, his needs become more complex and it becomes a little more challenging to create a safe environment in the bathroom for him to be bathed. JMF is so happy to be contributing to bathroom modifications that will make it a safer and more enjoyable environment for Brodie to bathe in. Without the modifications he would no longer be able to be showered at home as it is too hard for the Carers.

This grant will ensure Brodie can remain at home and make a much safer and more independent environment for him to be bathed in.

We look forward to continuing to support Brodie and his grandparents and have no doubt he will continue to defy the odds.

This is Brodie in the All Abilities Swing in Bairnsdale which he visits on most weekends. He just loves the swing.

JMF Kids 4 Kids and Big Kids 4 Kids are away!

Participants who have registered to complete an Ironman distance triathlon over 12 weeks are getting active and raising money for those who can’t. They have kicked off their journey on Saturday and are already posting pictures of the fun they are having.

The program raises money for young Australian’s in wheelchairs to grant them much needed equipment to enable them to be active, included in their everyday lives.

At the completion of the challenge grant presentations will be held in Victoria and NSW later in December and covering off more States in 2016. The more money that is raised through JMFKids4Kids and Big Kids 4 Kids the more families we can change the lives of.

We have 2 schools participating in this years challenge, St Pauls Grammar in NSW and Armadale Primary in Vic which is a fantastic way to create peer support and team building for the students whilst creating an experiencing where they have the opportunity to change the lives of children their own age but who are wheelchair bound.

Registrations are still OPEN for the 8 and 4 week challenge. REGISTER TODAY!

JMF Kids 4 Kids program get a BOOST

JMF Kids 4 Kids program get a BOOST

The John Maclean Foundation (JMF) exists to change the lives of young Australians who use wheelchairs.

Alexia

Alexia and her mum Valia with John and Nikki from BOOST Juice

Little Alexia is enjoying the spring sunshine more than most thanks to hundreds of generous children who helped to buy her a special stroller. The two-year-old was born with Cerebral Palsy and was previously excluded from simple activities like play groups or walks outside with her family because of her condition. But last year she was a grant recipient of the JMF Kids 4 Kids Challenge and as a result, was gifted with an appropriate stroller that provides the support her little body needs.

Mum, Valia, said the stroller seemed like a small thing but it had been life-changing for Alexia and her family.

“JMF has provided our family with an amazing gift, a specialised pram for Alexia who has cerebral palsy,” (mum) said.

“The pram has changed our lives and has given Alexia an opportunity to see life while safely and comfortable supported in the pram. She loves being outdoors and this pram has made that possible.

“We thank everyone responsible for making this happen. We are truly blessed.”

This year, The Boost Foundation is supporting JMF Kids 4 Kids and Big Kids 4 Kids for the second time and together we are aiming to raise enough money to give grants to over 20 families nationally.

“JMF is changing lives for families all over Australia and we’re so honoured and proud to be a part of this amazing work,” Adam Neill, General Manager of Boost Juice, said.

“Living without disabilities, it’s easy to take for granted simple things like being able to go where you want to go, when you want to go there. But if you need special equipment to help you do that and you don’t have access to it, just getting around can be a major challenge and it can really limit what families are able to do together.

“We’re aiming to change that equation for 20 families this year and give them back the freedom of mobility.”

On Saturday Sept 5, 2015 The John Maclean Foundation’s JMF Kids 4 Kids and Big Kids 4 Kids program kicks off for another year.

JMF Kids 4 Kids and big Kids 4 Kids is a fun and active way for adults and children to work towards completing an Ironman distance triathlon over a 4, 8 or 12 week period. Every week participants swim, bike and run a little whilst logging their km and raising money to grant little wheelies the basic equipment they need to remain active and included in their everyday lives.

This challenge is not a race, it is about encouraging healthy lifestyles in children and adults with the knowledge they are helping to change the lives of children like Alexia who live in wheelchairs.

KM’s can be accumulated whilst playing weekend sports like footy, soccer, netball, basketball or whilst riding to school/work or taking swimming lessons. It is all about giving it your best shot.

At the conclusion of the program participants are invited to join the Foundation at a grant presentation where they will be awarded their finishers T-Shirts, presented their medals and finishers certificates and most importantly meet the children and the families like Alexia the money they have raised has helped.

CEO of The John Maclean Foundation, Tiffany Loftus-Hills said today “Without the support and generosity of Companies like BOOST, JMF could not touch the lives of as many families as we do.

With BOOST supporting programs like JMF Kids 4 Kids and Big Kids for Kids they are not only helping JMF change lives of young Australian’s in wheelchairs but helping us create an active, healthy and grateful generation of youths who gain the understanding of what is feels like to help others.”

JMF has added Big Kids 4 Kids to this year’s challenge. Big Kids 4 Kids enables adults to get involved and cover the Ironman distance triathlon over 12, eight or four weeks whilst raising money along the way. It’s a great way to get active, take on a challenge and either together with friends or on your own become Ironman.

To get involved register at JMFKIDS4KIDS, and get ready to start a challenge that will change your life and those of young Australian’s living in wheelchairs.

If you would like any more details about JMF Kids 4 Kids or the Nepean Triathlon JMF wave please register your interest by emailing – tiffany@jmf.com.au

The John Maclean Foundation, www.jmf.com.au, holds official charitable status and is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). JMF is also endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) by the ATO.

Great news from Alexia!

Great news from Alexia!

Last year one year old Alexia was a grant recipient of the JMF Kids 4 Kids Challenge. Alexia was born with Cerebral Palsy and was unable to participate in any social situations like play group or walks outside and many other activities with her family as she did not have an appropriate stroller that provided the support her little body needed.

With the money raised through JMF Kids 4 Kids we were able to grant Alexia a stroller that provided the support she needed to be safe and comfortable whilst enjoying the simplest of things like an outing with her family.

“JMF has provided our family with an amazing gift, a specialised pram for Alexia who has cerebral palsy.

The pram has changed our lives and has given Alexia an opportunity to see life while safely and comfortable supported in the pram. She loves being outdoors and this pram has made that possible.

We thank everyone responsible for making this happen. We are truly blessed”, said Alexia’s mum.

JMF Kids 4 Kids starts Saturday September 5 and participants will not only be challenging themselves whilst they take on an IRONMAN distance triathlon over 12, 8 or 4 weeks but also raising money to help more children like Alexie.
