MEET GARY MULHALL

Gary Mulhall, a 4-year-old from Lake Munmorah, NSW, relies on his family for care due to his refractory epilepsy, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, limited left-side movement control, communication difficulties, and daily seizures. While Gary already had funding for his wheelchair, his family sought assistance from the John Maclean Foundation to ensure his safety during sleep at home. They required funds to purchase a Dinobumper (whole bed bumper) for Gary.

Gary's seizures pose a significant risk, particularly due to the possibility of head injuries affecting his shunt, which manages fluid build-up in his brain. Any head bumps could be life-threatening. The family had taken precautions to cushion play areas but faced challenges with Gary's wooden cot sides, making constant supervision necessary. Padded bed rails were the solution, offering safety and peace of mind during rest and sleep. With the Dinobumper, Gary's bed became a secure place, reducing anxiety for both him and his family during sleep and waking hours.

The Dinobumper was a custom-fit solution, ensuring proper security to prevent Gary from getting stuck in any gaps. After a successful trial, the family, with the guidance of his Occupational Therapist, applied for funding. With no statutory support available for this product, the John MacLean Foundation, along with a generous $500 contribution from Gary's grandparents, covered the remaining cost of the $3.5K accessory.
