MEET JACK DUMSDAY

Jack, a ten-year-old boy from Wodonga, Victoria, who has cerebral palsy, aspires to enjoy the same activities as his peers. His parents sought assistance from the John MacLean Foundation (JMF) to help him achieve a greater degree of independence.

Jack's father, well-versed in home automation, approached JMF with a funding request to equip Jack's bedroom with the necessary hardware and equipment, amounting to just under $1500. This investment was intended to empower Jack with control over basic functions in his room, such as opening blinds, adjusting lights, and enabling automatic lighting in the bathroom when he enters and exits.

The challenge in this endeavor lies in accommodating Jack's unique needs. Traditional sensors fall short, as Jack can remain still while reading, causing lights to turn off prematurely. Additionally, Jack required the flexibility to adapt to various situations. To address these needs, a versatile device was chosen. It can evolve with Jack as he grows and includes a portable remote that can accompany him in his wheelchair or walker throughout the house, offering him not just bedroom autonomy but the potential for greater independence in his daily activities.

Jack, despite his physical challenges, is an exceptional child with a passion for subjects like Star Wars, vehicles, space, the human body, and Lego. He excels academically in his Year 4 class.

What makes this project even more noteworthy is the cost savings achieved through Jack's father's hands-on installation of the technology. Recognizing the importance of this initiative, JMF stepped in to provide the necessary equipment, ensuring that it seamlessly serves Jack's quest for greater independence.
