MEET PIPPA MATHESON
Four-year-old Queenslander Pippa is at constant risk of seizures in the heat due to her medical condition, so her family applied to the John MacLean Foundation to help pay for ceiling fans and air conditioning in their new home.
JMF has funded two air conditioning units and two ceiling fans at a cost of $3750.
Pippa is a happy child who has a diagnosis of cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia, motor delay and periventricular leukomalacia so she requires support for all her personal care and activities during the day. She recently acquired a wheelchair to give her greater independence with her mobility.
Pippa’s mum Janine is her primary carer and was warned by her team of doctors that high heat could cause Pippa to fit so the fact their new home wasn’t fitted with a cooling system was extremely worrying to Janine.
The air conditioners have been installed in Pippa’s bedroom and the main living area, and the fans put to use in the adjoining playroom and Janine’s bedroom where Pippa will sometimes sleep.
Mum, daughter and big sister Zoe are grateful for a cooler property and safer environment for Pippa at home in Crestmead south-east of Brisbane.
