MEET SOPHIE HATTIE

Sixteen-year-old Sophie, residing in Pacific Pines, Queensland, received over $10,000 to modify her family's car, making it easier and safer to load her new wheelchair. Sophie faces high-care needs due to her diagnoses of Retts Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Quadriplegia), and Epilepsy. She frequently travels with her parents between the Gold Coast and Brisbane for medical and therapy appointments.

Sophie's wheelchair requires specialized equipment for safe loading into the car, and her recent prescription of a new wheelchair necessitated car modifications. The John MacLean Foundation (JMA) stepped in to assist by funding the purchase of a new wheelchair docking station and hoist. Sophie's new wheelchair includes power assist wheels for easier pushing as she grows, demanding an improved tie-down system and more effective hoist for safe loading, with a platform that allows carers to monitor her for seizures or breathing difficulties.

The new docking station and hoist not only enhance safety but also ease of operation, reducing the risk of hand and back injuries for Sophie's mom and other carers who continually care for her.
